I’m gonna get right to the point.
I am SICK and TIRED of watching coaches… anyone from so-called college “strength coaches” to high school football coaches… sit back and watch their athletes while they perform lifts, particularly things like squats and the olympic lifts, with TERRIBLE form.
I walked into a weight room the other day and the kids were doing some “clean and jerks”.
It was more like a round back spastic deadlift/reverse curl into an almost collapsing on your face front squat and a squirly half-overhead press.
The coach sat there and watched with this proud look on his face.
This kind of thing PISSES me off. I don’t understand how you can sit there and watch the form on some of these lifts (some things as basic as a squat) and “leave it alone”.
But, to be fair, I saw it in college too.
Strength and sport coaches letting things slide, watching crappy technique and chalking it up to “hard work”.
The thing is, by allowing this piss-poor technique to happen over and over again, you are PREVENTING the athlete from getting stronger/faster/more explosive because he’s NEVER going to be able to handle loads high enough to get the results you want with piss poor technique.
Organizing the training is an entire other matter altogether. Football coaches seem to have no consideration for the demands of the sport when they organize training, and end up training their kids all the same way (do you actually think a lineman and a wide receiver should be doing the same things in training?) and typically try to train them like bodybuilders with a program they got out of some joke of a muscle magazine.
BUT, if you’re a complete idiot and want to train your athletes like a bunch of bodybuilders, the least you can do is allow them to actually get STRONG at what they’re doing.
At least make an attempt to make it LOOK like you’re trying to do your job.
By either being too stupid to know better or too hardheaded to give a damn you’re only hurting yourself, your chances of keeping your job, and MOST importantly–the KIDS!
This kind of s0-called “coaching” not only puts the kids at risk of injury in the weight room, the will be WEAKER and SLOWER on the field, more likely to be injured in their sport, and more likely to be EMBARRASSED when the other team’s band is playing all night long because the other team is kicking their ass!
You can do what you want.
I’m going to be busy making my athletes STRONGER, FASTER, MORE ATHLETIC, LESS INJURY PRONE, MORE EXPLOSIVE, and getting them ready to DOMINATE the field in the fall.
South Texas football players and athletes, you DO have a choice.
